The Canal du Midi covers 240km from the River Garonne at Toulouse via Beziers and Carcassonne to the Mediterranean at Sete or Agde. It was originally the idea of Pierre-Paul Riquet who manged to get Louis XIV to back his idea. Little has changed on the canal since Risquet's day. The only difference is that the commercial traffic has now been replaced by holiday cruisers. The locks are still manned, many of them are manually operated and many of the lock keeper cottages are beautifully kept.
